Ryan Rothstein: It’s OK to not shoot a deer

While I’m writing these words, the outcome of my Minnesota firearms season has yet to be determined. I don’t know how it will play out, have no idea what I’ll see, and certainly have no idea what anyone in my group or on neighboring lands has shot. By the time you read this, most of that may have played out.
I’ve often heard people compare opening day to Christmas, but the longer I hunt, I’m not so sure that’s true.

State Roundup: Wishing you a safe and successful Wisconsin deer season

The crew here at Wisconsin Outdoor News would like to take just a minute to wish everyone the best of luck on the upcoming 2025 nine-day gun deer season opener that will kick-off with the start of shooting hours on Saturday, Nov. 22.
This is what we wait for, folks. Go out and have fun. Our hunting crew will open the Wisconsin season once again in Ashland County in what used to be Unit 28.

Outfoxing the Fox: Memories from an early season trapline

The following story took place three seasons ago during the trapping season of 2022-23. I had just had gall bladder surgery with severe complications. I had plans to trap close to the road.
While I underwent having several minor surgeries following the gall bladder removal, I was limited to trapping from the vehicle. What better way to do that than trapping canines in western New York on a small trapline that consisted mostly of private farms with a few close to the road locations on public land.

Pennsylvania’s Shirley Grenoble fondly remembered as trailblazer for women in hunting

As a teenager in the 1980s, Joanie Haidle felt like she was the only woman who loved to hunt.
And then she heard about Shirley Grenoble. She picked up a hunting magazine at the grocery store and saw an article written by Grenoble. Intrigued, Haidle was determined to meet Grenoble, which she did in 2003 and went on to form a lifelong bond based on being women who loved to hunt.

Dean Bortz: I’d settle for another deer season just like 2021

Not being a prophet, nor clairvoyant by any means, I have no way of knowing how the rest of the 2025 hunting seasons will play out. I’ll just hope everyone in our hunting group can have as much fun as we collected in 2021.
That year I hunted in Wyoming with my son, Daniel, who was living in Gillette, Wyo., at the time, and in the South Dakota Black Hills with my grandson, Mason Bortz-Parish, and my daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Chris.

Steve Sarley: Stroke provided perspective for this outdoorsman

I was thinking about the shotgun that I have and love. It is sitting in a gun safe, locked up and secure. It has not been touched in more than a year.
I have not gone hunting or target shooting since I suffered a stroke that knocked me on my keister in June 2024. I had a hemorrhagic stroke, which is one of the worst kinds of strokes, not that there is any kind of good one to have. Things could have been worse for me.

Minnesota climate plan has eye on natural, working lands

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has received public input on its updated climate action framework to ensure the state’s goals to become carbon-neutral by 2050.
Of the various goals and aspects outlined in this framework labeled as tools that can be used to by state agencies to either lower carbon emissions or improve systems for carbon absorption, natural landscapes will play a role.

New land purchase is a possibility for Ohio DNR

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) is facing a unique opportunity to expand its public lands in southern Ohio.
Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker said The Scioto Land Company, a producer of newsprint, approached the agency in recent months with an offer to sell about 22,000 acres of its land in six counties. Price tag: $37 million.

A scant 521 turkeys killed during the fall hunt in Ohio

If Ohio’s turkey hunters thought this year’s fall season drifted off the centerline, they’d have dead-centered the bull’s-eye.
Even so, the results of Ohio’s 2025 fall turkey season still largely fell in line with recent permit and harvest trends, meaning declining, Mark Wiley, the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s lead wild turkey biologist, told Ohio Outdoor News.
