Steve Carney: Impressed by local bow shop, and a goose jerky recipe

The owner of Prairie Archery in Parkers Prairie, Jon, was amazing. He asked me to step up and shoot on the 20-yard range, and he watched my form (my form is not textbook, by any means), and he quickly evaluated that my poundage was too high. He said my support hand was shaking, which is an indication of too much draw weight.

Searching for the perfect deer gun? It could be a shotgun

I was thrilled about straight-walled rifles becoming legal during the regular Ohio gun season. Since then, I have been searching for the ultimate deer rifle.

Flies, beetles helping in battle against invasive hemlock woolly adelgid in New York

The state’s fight against the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid may be looking up. This past summer, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Cornell University’s New York State Hemlock Initiative (NYSHI) confirmed the first establishment of Leucotaraxis argenticollis, a type of silver fly, in New York State.
These silver flies, DEC says, are released to help control hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive insect that attacks and kills hemlock trees.

Car-top boat launch, fishing pier set to open on New York’s Skaneateles Lake after eagle nest delays project

Construction is substantially complete on a new fishing pier and car-top boat launch at the southwest end of Skaneateles Lake.
The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has partnered with the City of Syracuse on the $330,000 project, which has been delayed for more than a decade due mainly to concerns about a bald eagle nest in a white pine tree across the road.
