Sun, heat greet hunters, but ducks were plentiful in some areas of Minnesota on opener

Opening weekend of the 2025 Minnesota duck season had a little bit of everything for the state’s roughly 50,000 waterfowl hunters.
Lots of blue sky. Unseasonably warm morning weather that turned into balmy, summer-like afternoons. Just enough wind, at least in most areas, to keep decoys listing and ducks moving. And, of course, plenty of hungry mosquitoes. In a state with 87 counties and four distinct habitat types or biomes covering nearly 87,000 square miles, hunter success will vary – and it sure did during this year’s duck opener.

State, local partners create Orchard Creek access on Cedar River in Minnesota’s Mower County

After more than a decade in the works, a major access has opened for the public on the Cedar River State Water Trail, about five miles south of Austin, Minn.
Paddlers now can exit or launch onto the Cedar River after crews removed a construction-related silt curtain last week from the water below the new concrete ramp. This 3-acre site off Minnesota Highway 105 in Lyle Township also can be enjoyed by anglers and nature enthusiasts, and it features off-road parking stalls.

Illinois DNR asks anglers to keep smaller bass at Lake Sara in Effingham County

DNR continues its work to manage the largemouth bass population in Lake Sara, a 640-acre body of water in Effingham County.
A protected slot limit put in place back in 2017 appears to be assisting in the effort, but fisheries biologists are encouraging anglers to keep more bass below that 15- to 18-inch slot. In other words, keep smaller bass.

Meetings on CWD preclude testing effort in Illinois

The final Illinois DNR information meeting on the state’s CWD situation is scheduled to be held Oct. 2 in Adams County. Which means deer hunters who attended one of the 10 gatherings have a better idea what biologists are dealing with as the deer disease spreads.
More importantly, they were reminded that the goal is to prevent further spread.
