Minnesota’s bear harvest likely to reach about 2,500 – an average year, DNR says

With fewer than 20 days remaining in the 2025 black bear season (it ends Oct. 12), the Minnesota DNR’s large carnivore specialist, Dan Stark, said that the number harvested will likely top out around 2,500 bears for 2025.
“We’re at about 70% of what the total was for last season, and at this point we’re going to end up around 2,500 bears total this year,” Stark wrote to Outdoor News via email.

Commentary: Poaching is theft, and poachers aren’t hunters: a message we must share following B&C report

Hunters don’t need reminders of who we are and have always been: the first defenders of wildlife. Teddy Roosevelt and our forebears didn’t save America’s wildlife by accident. They drew a bold, unbreakable line between hunters who give and poachers who steal. That line is fading before our eyes. Too many now cross it. Some out of ignorance, but far too many by calculated choice. And now we know just how bad it is.

Mike Schoonveld: Beat freezer burn with a smarter approach to storing your fillets

Since my kids were little, most Friday night dinners at my house have been “Fishy Fridays.” Now I’m a grandpa and the grandkids know if they’re at my house on a Friday evening, they’re going to have fish for supper as well.
Fresh fish is best, but though I fish a lot, I can’t guarantee enough recently-caught fish will be available to provide a meal for my wife, my family, friends or even myself every Friday. So, I head for the deep freeze.

Tyler Frantz: Don’t waste a moment of glorious fall season

Pumpkin spice, flannels and football aren’t the only harbingers of fall’s arrival. The autumnal equinox officially graced the northern hemisphere on Sept. 22, marking the gradual shift toward shorter days and longer nights. With that comes cooler weather, vibrant foliage and prime outdoor opportunities.
