Fishers possibly reproducing in northeast Ohio as more animals are spotted

Bald eagles, bobcats, and black bears are not the only wildlife species making a comeback in Ohio. The fisher, a furry cousin of the weasel, is also reappearing in a handful of northeast counties.
Fishers are about the size of a house cat with a tail that can be two feet long, according to published reports. They were extirpated from Ohio nearly 200 years ago but appear to be coming back as the state grows more forested.

Ohio Insider: Waterfowl biologist in right place at right time to offer life-saving help

This past spring, Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife waterfowl biologist Dave Sherman found himself in the exact right place at the exact right time.
Back in early May, Sherman was working on a pump with a couple of private contractors at Middle Harbor when he noticed something odd on the water on Lake Erie.

Slot limits, other fishing rule changes eyed in Michigan

Walleye, trout steams and lakes, spearfishing, and lake trout were among topics of discussion and proposed regulation changes at the Michigan Natural Resources Commission meeting earlier this month in Lansing.
The DNR’s Fisheries Division proposed a slate of changes and presented them to the commission for consideration. They will be up for action at the Oct. 9 NRC meeting at Michigan Technological University in Houghton.

Commentary: Opposition to Freeman Run trout stocking experiment in Pennsylvania overblown

I am primarily a wild trout angler, and I agree that, in general, Class A wild trout streams should not be stocked. However, I am amazed at all the attention, misinformation and exaggerated claims that have been flying around related to the proposed stocking experiment on a Class A section of Freeman Run in Potter County, Pa.
The sky is not falling. Note, it is a limited stocking experiment to learn what effect, if any, stocking has on the wild brown trout population in a three-mile section of the freestone stream.

New Pennsylvania research facility finished for Lake Erie

A new $2.4 million facility will bolster the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s research efforts on yellow perch and walleyes in Lake Erie.
In early September, the commission opened the new facility in Fairview, which houses the Lake Erie Research Unit. The 2,800 square-foot building, located on the grounds of the Fairview State Fish Hatchery contains a research laboratory, library, conference room, and modern office space for three full-time biologists, seasonal biologist aides, and a waterways conservation officer.
