Minnesota’s Zone 31 produces 560-pound bear as state hunters find average success early

While spending Minnesota’s Sept. 1 bear-hunt opener watching a bait in Bear Permit Area 31, it was unusually quiet as Laura Gaulke, of Cloquet, said she’d seen only a squirrel and a grouse. So when a big black bear strolled up to her bait after shooting hours ended, it made sense why the area was seemingly serene.
“I think he pretty much owned it (the area). [There were] no wolves, and in northern Minnesota, not to see or hear wolves is unreal,” Gaulke said.
After seeing the size of the bear, Gaulke walked out of the woods. She returned the next day and waited for the big bruiser to materialize again.

Bob Gwizdz: A reminder that fishing is not rocket science

I got an email from my buddy Jeff Greene recently. He said he’d just read my column on fishing the Hex hatch – in which I lamented that most of my fishing buddies were wimping out on me when I was trying to get them to go – and he invited me to come fish with him.
I first met Greene, a retired Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist, 35 years ago when he was working in the Jackson district. We hunted pheasants together, a few times, until he transferred to the Paris field office, where we continued our relationship chasing grouse and woodcock.

Liberal duck seasons expected again in 2026 after results of 2025 federal survey

When the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released its 2025 Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey Field Reports on July 3 – the precursor to the annual Waterfowl Population Status Report – you could almost hear the collective groan of waterfowl managers across North America.
The pilot-biologists who flew the early-spring survey across the U.S. and Canadian breeding grounds found mostly parched landscapes and dry wetlands – inhospitable conditions for breeding ducks.
