New Audubon Western Pennsylvania director adjusts to new role in a new state

Chris Bason regards the crabbing and fishing he did with his father while growing up in Delaware as some of the most memorable and important times in his life.
“That’s how I got into conservation – through my family,” said Bason, 48, who also took up hunting for ducks, and eventually deer. Bason’s lifelong affinity for nature shaped a 25-year career in conservation, leading to his appointment as the new executive director of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania.

No new sign of cougar cubs confirmed in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula last March

On March 13, Roell confirmed that photographs of a pair of spotted cougar kittens had been taken in Ontonagon County in the western Upper Peninsula. The photographs were submitted to the DNR by a local resident there who took the pictures on private property.

Steve Griffin: Research debunks long-held theory on walleye spawning in Michigan’s Saginaw Bay

Scientists work to answer a question: Where do these fish come from?
Who’d-a-thunk-it? Modern Saginaw Bay walleyes, long thought to spawn mainly in tributary rivers, are doing most of it in open waters. That’s the upshot of research findings reported this month by Michigan DNR Fisheries Research Biologist Dave Fielder.

Iowa’s rabbit, squirrel season opens Aug. 30 with good numbers of both expected

The good news for Iowa’s cottontail rabbit hunters is that Iowa’s rabbit population is the highest in more than a decade, with the vast majority of Iowa considered to have good to excellent populations. Iowa’s cottontail rabbit season begins Aug. 30 statewide.
“It should be a really good year for rabbit hunting not only for experienced hunters, but for young or novice hunters who can learn necessary skills with little competition.”

Michigan’s estimated 2024 deer harvest 25% higher than registered numbers

Based on preliminary estimates from the Michigan DNR’s annual deer harvest survey compiled by statistician Brian Frawley, hunters harvested 25% more deer during 2024 seasons than the harvest reported via online or phone (electronically).
Survey estimates show hunters tagged 373,300 whitetails last fall compared to the 280,304 that were reported electronically. That’s a difference of 92,996 deer.

Ohio State University students report on fisheries research at Stone Lab

The Ohio State University’s F. T. Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay offers scholarships for highly qualified students enrolled in classes each summer through its Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) program.
Stone Lab’s research coordinator, Justin Chaffin, said that for this highly competitive opportunity, 150 to more than 200 students apply each year for four REU projects conducted in the Lake Erie island area that are mentored by university faculty.

Iowa’s mourning dove, teal seasons open in early September; here’s what to know

Iowa’s mourning dove season begins Sept. 1, and with the mild weather in the forecast and a later teal season, state wildlife experts are predicting a busy opening day.
“Anytime the opening day falls on a holiday weekend, we see higher participation, and with the weather forecast and teal not opening until Sept. 6, we expect a lot of hunters to be out,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Steve Pollick: Ohio needs a ballot issue to fund H2Ohio

Gov. Mike DeWine recently hinted at coming to the aid of his high-profile H2Ohio conservation program by floating a ballot issue for public bonds to finance it, this in the wake of the state legislature’s recent hatcheting of program funding.
It’s a good idea, one worth pursuing and supporting. H2Ohio is a critical, longterm program and the state’s lawmakers were wrong when they cut its biennial funding by some 40% over the next two years.
