Three solid patterns to use for ‘hot’ August muskies

Catching muskies in August can be difficult. Years ago anglers believed their lack of action was a result of the fish losing their teeth. We now know muskies carry a full set of dentures all season long, but they can still be a challenge to catch.
Fortunately, there are a number of patterns that can produce muskies in late summer. Here are three that should figure into your muskie plans.

Gretchen Steele: Here are Illinois hiking trails worth exploring in late summer

Late July is the sweet spot of summer in Illinois. The bugs (mostly) settle down, the early morning air still holds a touch of cool, and the woods are a riot of green growth, blooms, birdsong, and rustling leaves. It’s the perfect time to lace up your hiking boots or pump up those bike tires and get out on your local trails.
But don’t underestimate the magic just down the road.

Wildlife weather northern Minnesota storm, but hunter trails likely affected

When the power went out and the warning sirens blared early on the morning of June 21 in northwestern Minnesota, all who were paying attention to the oncoming storm were prepared to head to their basements or some other secure location.
Beltrami County sustained the bulk of the storm’s fury during its rampage through Minnesota. No one knows exactly how many trees were felled by the sustained Category 3 hurricane-velocity gales that tore through the Bemidji, but no one would be surprised if the count exceeded a million.

Commentary: U.S. House considering ‘dirty water’ bill to strip away key Clean Water Act protections

Recent polling shows that while Minnesotans have their share of political disagreements, those disagreements largely end, in a sense, at the water’s edge.
A whopping 86% of Minnesotans reached in a March opinion poll agreed that protecting water is very or extremely important. And while it’s true that those in the Land of 10,000 Lakes have a special relationship with our waters, we’re not alone.

Want to hunt bruins by bow? Here’s what to know

If you’ve bowhunted deer for years and want to try for bears, you’re just a tweak or two away from getting your bow and arrows ready for the challenge.
Likewise, if you’ve already gun-hunted bears and want to increase the challenge with a recurve, compound bow or crossbow, the archery rig you choose will work just fine on whitetails, too. Either way, bear populations are strong across the Great Lakes states and nearby Canadian provinces.
