Popular access on Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River still open, at least for now

A popular boat access on the Susquehanna River will remain open, for now.
The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission had planned to restrict the West Falls Access in Exeter Township, Wyoming County, from June 10 to Sept. 10 this year. A gate was installed to prevent people from backing down the boat ramp to the river, instead limiting access to craft that could be carried, such as kayaks and canoes.

Shapiro signs bill lifting Pennsylvania’s Sunday hunting ban

The long-standing ban on Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania has been lifted.
On July 9 Gov. Josh Shapiro signed a bill to repeal the ban – recently approved by the state Senate and House of Representatives – into law, leaving all Sunday-hunting decisions to the Game Commission. House Bill 1431, introduced by Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Allegheny, which will fully repeal the ban, passed the state Senate by a 34-16 vote and was approved by the state House by a vote of 142-61.

Budget offers some hope for Ohio DNR funding

Opposition from sportsmen to the Ohio Senate’s version of the 2026-2027 state budget paid off.
Bonus money from oil and gas leases in state wildlife areas will continue to go for improvements, land acquisition, and shooting range updates, following action by the general assembly’s conference committee and Gov. Mike DeWine. DeWine signed the final version of the budget into law on June 30.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Lower Great Lakes Office in New York conducting important work for native species and the habitat they call home

When it comes to native fish species such as lake sturgeon, lake trout, and brook trout (to name but a few), the Lower Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Conservation office located in Basom, N.Y., (part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and situated within the headquarters of Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge), is an important component to on-going research and habitat work.
The office is part of a network of field stations across the country dedicated to preserving, protecting and enhancing our natural resources. It’s too bad not too many people know about it.

Midsummer lake trout are not out of reach; here’s how to catch them

When May arrives each year and Minnesota’s closed fishing seasons re-open, inland lake trout fishing begins. Lake trout are found in shallow waters in the spring, accessible to anglers at a variety of depths.
But as spring turns to summer and summer days grow warmer, the water column within the lakes where lake trout reside warms to match, and the process of stratification begins to establish layering.
