Man jailed for theft from Michigan state forest campgrounds

A Sunfield, Mich., man returned to the Luce County District Court June 16 for a restitution hearing regarding his involvement in a series of state forest campground thefts in the Upper Peninsula.

Dale Hendershot named Michigan DNR hunter education Instructor of the Year

Dale Hendershot of Gladwin is the Michigan Department of Natural Resources 2024 Hunter Education Instructor of the Year, an honor bestowed at the June meeting of the Michigan Natural Resources Commission in Bay City.
“I am very humbled by this,” Hendershot said. “There are many deserving instructors, and I’m honored that my peers felt I was deserving of this.”

Outdoor Observations: Coyote legislation introduced in Michigan despite unsettled lawsuit

Despite an unsettled lawsuit on the legality of shortening Michigan’s coyote season by three months, legislation has been introduced in Lansing addressing the coyote hunting and trapping season.
House Bill 4554, introduced by Rep. Parker Fairbairn (R-Harbor Springs), and Senate Bill 366, introduced by Sen Michele Hoitenga (R-Manton), both would amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to allow individuals to hunt coyotes year-round if they possess a fur harvesters license.

New campsite reservation system coming this fall at two Ohio state forests

A new system for campsite reservations is now available for Hocking State Forest and for Mohican-Memorial State Forest.
There are 23 campsites available for reservation at the Hocking State Forest Horse Campground, and seven park-and-pack campsites available at Mohican-Memorial State Forest. The sites were previously first come, first served camping areas.
