Trump administration plans to rescind ‘roadless rule’

The Trump administration plans to rescind a nearly quarter-century-old rule that blocked logging on national forest lands, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced Monday.
The roadless rule adopted in the last days of Bill Clinton’s presidency in 2001 long has chafed Republican lawmakers, especially in the West where national forests sprawl across vast, mountainous terrain and the logging industry has waned.

Dan Ladd: Why more than just trout anglers should understand New York’s Adirondacks brook trout plan

It’s hard to beat the silence of an Adirondack brook trout pond on a perfect spring day. Other than the November deer woods in the same part of northern New York, or listening to gobblers on the roost anywhere during the spring season, there are few other places I’d rather be.
Actually, the pond I was patrolling for brookies in a lightweight boat wasn’t all that remote. But it was still pretty quiet there just the same, and for most of the morning I had it all to myself, along with the loons.

New York Mixed Bag: Adirondack Brook Trout Management Plan public comment period extended to June 30

Seeking more input from anglers, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has extended the public comment period for the recently released Draft Adirondack Brook Trout Pond Management Plan through June 30.
Brook trout are not only New York’s state fish, but also an iconic species of the Adirondacks that have faced many challenges over the last several decades.

Steve Pollick: A first report from Ohio’s berry-picking season

Dear Maddy, Charlie, Aidan, and Zachary,
Grampa Frogs wanted to write you a little report on the first berry picking expedition in Froggy Bottom, since you could not be here this year. I was out today, mostly scouting for patches of berries and picking the first few ripe ones. I kept an eye out for berry patches when I re-mowed walking trails a couple of weeks ago. I am sending a photograph of today’s pickings – just a couple of big Grampa-handfuls to show for it.

Try Waushara County’s Big Silver, Irogami for bass and bluegills in Wisconsin

The Wautoma DNR fisheries team ran a comprehensive netting and shocking survey on Big Silver Lake in 2021 and a one-night electrofishing survey of adjacent Irogami Lake in the spring of 2023. The Irogami survey looked primarily at largemouth bass and panfish abundance and size, although the team handled all fish that came in the boat. The Silver Lake survey assessed the entire fish community over a number of days and evenings.
