Commentary: Ohio’s right to hunt and fish initiative lacks needed substance

The proposed legislation to make hunting and fishing a constitutional right in Ohio does not provide the protection for these time-honored traditions that backers believe they do.
I have been following the right to hunt and fish initiatives across the United States for several years. Just over two years ago, I participated in a webinar hosted by the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses. It included speakers from several states. They presented what their bills accomplished and how they managed the ballot process required to enshrine the language in their respective state constitutions.

Star Watch: Examining what ‘earthshine’ is

I used to wonder, sometimes just before or just after a new moon phase: “Why can I see a faint glow of the Moon’s entire outline?”
After a brief search of the Internet, I found the answer on NASA’s website. It’s called “earthshine” and it’s basically the result of sunlight bouncing off Earth and hitting the Moon.

Cicada emergence offers Pennsylvania anglers a rare and brief opportunity

There’s a buzz in the central Pennsylvania outdoor community – literally. For the first time since 2008, Brood XIV periodical cicadas have emerged en masse across the region. This rare appearance of large insects, with bright red eyes and black bodies, is a treat for naturalists – and a golden opportunity for anglers.
“It might take the fish a bit to figure it out,” said Brad Zeiders, a fly-fishing guide based in Blair County. “But once cicadas start hitting the water, the trout will gorge themselves. The bug creates a disturbance – and it’s game on.”

Blue crab population decreases in Chesapeake Bay, weather blamed

The Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey, a cooperative effort between the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, estimates 238 million blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay in 2025, a decrease from last year’s 317 million crabs.
The results showed decreases in the abundance of adult male and female crabs, as well as a decline in the juvenile population, marking the sixth consecutive year of below-average juvenile recruitment found in the survey.

Pennsylvania hunters can learn all about processing their own venison

Pennsylvania hunters can take advantage of a hands-on course all about venison.
Penn State Extension will offer “Venison 101” again this year. It’s a popular hands-on course for hunters to get a comprehensive look at venison butchering, processing and cooking. Online components will combine with an in-person workshop – scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
