Pennsylvania Game Commission busts 8 poachers in Cambria County

The  Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Southwest Region recently announced details related to a lengthy investigation involving the illegal taking of 11 white-tailed deer and one gray fox.
The offenses occurred in Cambria County between 2023-24, resulting in 35 charges among eight individuals, who all lost their hunting privileges for at least four years. The investigation began in March 2024, when a game warden conducted a license check on one of the defendants while he was fishing in Indiana County.

Federal officials vow to reverse mining ban in Boundary Waters watershed

Via social media on Wednesday, June 11, Trump administration officials declared they would initiate the process to reverse a 20-year mining moratorium on the Rainy River watershed surrounding the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota.

The announcement comes one day after advocates for protecting the BWCAW applauded the removal of a provision (Section 80131) from the U.S. House Reconciliation Bill that would have opened up the Rainy River watershed to sulfide-ore copper mining.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the plan on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

Lake Erie water levels require boaters’ attention in Ohio

According to the International Joint Commission, Lake Erie water is at its lowest level since 2014.
Without the first respectable period of ice cover in three years, which at times covered 90% of the lake, it could have been worse as evaporation may have taken a bigger toll in the form of lake effect snow. It was clear when the boating season started in March that Lake Erie’s water level was down when the Ohio ramps to the lake looked longer. River and harbor entrances in some locations that allowed boating outside the dredged channels now contain sediment deposits too shallow to get through.
