Wisconsin DNR seeking tips on illegal shooting of important bull elk for central herd

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking for the public’s help to gather information on the illegal killing of a bull elk in Jackson County.
DNR staff received and responded to a report of a dead elk on the morning of Tuesday, March 18. The elk was located off East Snow Creek Road and on private property north of the city of Black River Falls where department staff were conducting elk capture efforts to radio-collar and relocate a small group of elk.

Pennsylvania sees record demand for state campsites after federal closings

The slated closing of several federal campgrounds in Pennsylvania is spurring a surge in reservations at state parks and forests.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reports a nearly 30% increase in campsite reservations in March compared to the same time last year, as a result of the planned shuttering of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facilities at Raystown Lake in Huntingdon County, and Cowanesque and Tioga-Hammond lakes in Tioga County amid a growing enthusiasm for outdoors recreation.

Staffing for sea lamprey control program is back on track

The Great Lakes Fisheries Commission’s sea lamprey control program is back on track after federal job cuts had eliminated a dozen contracted workers at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“On the staffing, it does look like we’re getting things back on track,” Greg McClinchey, GLFC’s director of political and legislative affairs, told Michigan Outdoor News. “The hiring freeze on seasonal staff has now been lifted.”
The GLFC has for decades contracted with the USFWS to carry out chemical treatments in hundreds of Michigan rivers to kill invasive lamprey that consume up to 40 pounds of fish per year.

Resorters across Minnesota are springing into action to get ready for fishing opener

Minnesota’s walleye-fishing opener is fast approaching (May 10), and most of the state’s anglers have spent the past few weeks sharpening hooks, inventorying their jigs, putting new line on their reels, and checking their cold-weather rain gear in anticipation of that first day on the water.

Dean Bortz: A sweet and sour spring – syrup and kraut

Wanna know the second best thing about St. Patrick’s Day? I say second best thing because I’m counting Guinness, corned beef and cabbage, revelry and anything else that occurs on St. Patrick’s Day as the first best thing, as long as I don’t get arrested.
So, the second best thing about St. Patrick’s Day coming around one more time – (and I’m saying this in a whisper so only my friends can hear) – grocery stores always put their piles of cabbage on sale the day after the celebration ends.

H2Ohio is on the state budget chopping block

The Ohio House of Representatives’ plan to cut $120 million from H2Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine’s flagship water quality program, jeopardizes the state’s fragile progress in combating harmful algal blooms and safeguarding clean drinking water for millions, according to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).
“Slashing funding for H2Ohio isn’t just a budget cut. It’s a gamble with Ohio’s water, health, and economy,” said Gail Hesse, Great Lakes water program director for NWF.
