Jeffrey Frischkorn: Streams say a lot for those willing to listen

Creeks like to talk about themselves, the chatter being light and happy when the water flows and such are running normally.
And yet when storms set the mood on edge and the banks are being buffeted by an outpouring of muddy water, well, the language is much different. One that isn’t fit to be heard in mixed company, let alone in the presence of children. On Monday, my little stream made its greeting a cherry one, saying it had missed me. Of course, I missed my little fishing buddy, too.

Mike Schoonveld: Fishing with lead core line isn’t always simple, but it catches fish

Once upon a time, Chuck, an employee at a company that manufactured Dacron fishing line, popped into his supervisor’s office on a Monday morning and said, “Hey boss, got a minute? I’ve got an idea for you.”
“What’s up?” said the boss, tilting back in his desk chair.
“You know how our Dacron line is hollow and how sometimes we set up the machines to braid the line around a slightly thicker strand of Dacron to make it stronger? How about we weave the Dacron around a thin lead wire?”

Dave Carlson entering Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame

Wisconsin’s natural resources always fascinated Dave Carlson, whether he was reporting stories during his 40-plus years in TV and newspapers, or clearing brush and organizing conservation programs in retirement.

Therefore, it’s fitting that Carlson, 78, of Eau Claire, will enter the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame at
4 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. The WCHF’s ceremonies will be held virtually. Joining Carlson in the Hall of Fame that day will be J. Baird Callicott, 83, a longtime professor of environmental ethics and philosophy at UW-Stevens Point (2 p.m. ceremony); and Robert Freckmann, 85, a retired biology professor and namesake of the Robert W. Freckmann Herbarium at UW-Stevens Point (6 p.m. ceremony).

Sportsman profile: Pennsylvania’s G. Warren Elliott devoted to aquatic resources

Although he couldn’t have known it as a child, growing up on Pennsylvania’s famed Yellow Breeches Creek sparked in G. Warren Elliott a lifelong interest in fisheries conservation.
The Pennsylvania citizen representative to the Chesapeake Bay Commission, who recently completed terms as Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission board president, and as vice-chair of the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, Elliott spent countless childhood hours exploring the creek and teaching himself to catch trout on doughballs, worms and a $5 fishing rod.

Want a fun turkey-hunting experience this spring? Just add water

As I paddled across the calm lake, I stopped briefly to turn and admire the beautiful tom turkey riding behind me. The sun shone brightly on the glorious colors that adorned my latest turkey harvest.
I was happy that day. The best-laid plan had not gone awry. In fact, it had worked to perfection. Pouring a cup of coffee and lighting a good cigar, I took time to celebrate. As the kayak rocked gently on the water’s swells, I took stock of how I had gotten there.
