Top new lures for the 2025 open-water season

While forward-facing sonar certainly has had some criticism, it doesn’t mean that lure manufacturers aren’t acknowledging that they need to have baits that work better for it, and most of them are creating baits that can be “seen” better by the technology.
The good thing is these baits also work well for the angler who hasn’t joined the world of FFS. Here is a look at some great options to add to your tackle box as you head onto the open water.

Lima Lake a quiet, small fishery in northwest Ohio

Lima Lake isn’t quite the place that anglers will place near the top of their list as a desired “fishing destination,” but if you happen to be in the Allen County area of Lima, the lake wouldn’t be a terrible spot to wet a line.
Lima Lake is part of the Johnny Appleseed Metropark. While it has fish, it also serves as a source of drinking water for the city of Lima.

Jigs and swimbaits are a simple but effective approach for spring bass

Each year, I grow less interested in what technology brings to largemouth bass fishing. My age is the reason. I enjoy catching them as I always have – with jigs.

Wallace Stegner summed up these feelings with eloquence. “There is a special quality that people have when they have the dignity of scarcity.” The jig became as good as live bait when I started fishing on my own. It turned into a necessity when I saw how fun and effective jigs were to use.

Walleye spawning runs on Ohio’s Sandusky and Maumee rivers are right on the doorstep

Once that all danger of their fishing lines or themselves being swept away by chunks of ice and tree limbs drifting downriver, anglers began wading into or walking the shorelines of Western Basin rivers seeking walleyes.
The primary pair of rivers in Lake Erie that support robust spawning runs of first walleyes, and then white bass, are the Sandusky and Maumee rivers in Ohio. Certain sections of these rivers have the correct combination of depth, flow rates, and preferred rocky habitat used by these species to broadcast their eggs over.

Pennsylvania proposes reduced bag limit on migratory Canada goose

This year’s avian influenza outbreak isn’t a factor behind proposed reductions to the 2025-26 Canada goose season in Pennsylvania, but biologists have noticed something unusual.
Each year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, along with the states in the Atlantic Flyway, meet to establish federal frameworks for migratory game bird seasons. States must set their seasons within the federal frameworks, although there is some flexibility.
