Youth snow goose hunt in Illinois filled with huge flocks and lessons learned

Despite less-than-ideal conditions for snow goose hunting, six hunters ranging in age from 12 to 17 displayed remarkable perseverance at the 2025 Youth Snow Goose Hunt sponsored by the Kaskaskia River Delta Waterfowl Chapter (KRDW) in Illinois.
Held at Willow Creek Waterfowl near Carlyle, the event provided an invaluable opportunity for young sportsmen and women to develop their hunting skills under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Bill Smith re-elected as chairman of Wisconsin’s Natural Resources Board

Bill Smith was re-elected to serve as chair of the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB).
Smith, of Shell Lake, has served as chair the past two years. His NRB term expires May 1, but he can be re-appointed to a second term by Gov. Tony Evers. Smith graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a degree in civil engineering. He worked 34 years for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) as an environmental engineer, and then as the DNR Northern Region director.

Two New Yorkers inducted into NWTF Hall of Fame

Two of the three inductees this year into the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Grand National Calling Championships Hall of Fame are natives of New York.
One – Ernie Calandrelli – was part of the early days of the NWTF, barnstorming across the country with a longtime friend and fellow Hall of Famer (Paul Butski) to compete in calling competitions.
The other – Jim Pollard – is generally regarded as one of the finest turkey callers in history, with a competitive resume to support that label.

Osceola ice fishing team wins high school’s third Wisconsin state title

The Osceola Chieftains ice-fishing team won its high school’s third Wisconsin Interscholastic Fishing Association State Championship on the Mississippi River in La Crosse during the Feb. 14-15 event.
The WIFA held its state championship on Mississippi Pool 7 and Pool 8 with 79 of WIFA’s 150 teams competing. Osceola’s high school anglers won their third state trophy by taking top honors with 527.25 inches of fish. That mark edged out Slinger’s 516.25 inches (second place) and Winneconne’s third-place finish with 506.75 inches of fish.

Minnesota’s Urban Ice Anglers sees first-year challenges, rewards in getting kids ice fishing

Karl Erickson is on a mission. As founder and executive director of Urban Ice Anglers in Minnesota, he’s working furiously to take 10,000 kids ice fishing. In one season.

Court denies Unkechaug Indian Nation fishing rights for “glass” eels in New York

On Jan. 28, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit found that the “Andros Order,” a 1676 agreement between Edmund Andros, then the Royal Governor of New York, and the Unkechaug Indian Nation, did not entitle the Unkechaug to harvest the immature American eels known as “glass eels,” which are protected by state Department of Environmental Conservation regulations.
