Minnesota DNR plan addresses bear range change, ag damage

While Minnesota bear hunters bask in the glow of what was the highest bear kill in more than 20 years, DNR officials are asking for their opinion on plans to potentially tweak some bear management unit boundaries in the state.
The proposed changes, however, aren’t necessarily aimed at reducing bear harvest which, in 2023, dove off a cliff, when nearly half the number of bears were killed as in 2024. Rather, the DNR’s proposal is directed at addressing areas of the state – largely in the areas of transition from agriculture to forest – where crop damage complaints arise.

The ancient sport of falconry is changing with changing Midwest winters

Stephanie Stevens has a good reason to love the bone-numbing cold of a Wisconsin winter. Every weekend, she loads up her minivan with a large green box and drives out to rural areas, usually the edges of friends’ farm fields.
After she slips on a thick leather glove, out of the box and onto her wrist hops her unconventional hunting buddy, Alexie Echo-Hawk, Echo for short: a juvenile red-tailed hawk.
“She’s intense,” Stevens says, stroking her dappled feathers lightly.

Dutchman Lake 8-pounder proof of largemouth growth in this southern Illinois water

Reigniting Dutchman Lake’s channel catfish has been a goal of the Illinois DNR, as the agency stocked 1,500 of the fish in 2023. That stocking featured channel cats in the 4- to 7-inch range, providing them a solid start in the 118-acre southern Illinois lake.
Dutchman Lake, located north of Vienna, offers quiet angling. Some might even call it serene. But there are plenty of fish, thanks to some solid habitat.

Great Lakes official says stall of carp plan by Illinois hard to figure

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker continues to hold up the Brandon Road Project – a billion-dollar project to block invasive carp from entering Lake Michigan. The Project is funded primarily by the federal government, and Pritzker halted the project last month, saying he’s worried the administration will pull their end of the funding.

Illinois DNR seeking summer instructors for urban fishing program clinics

Illinois DNR is looking for Urban Fishing Program instructors to lead summer fishing clinics at locations in a dozen counties around the state.
The fishing instructors selected for the popular program are considered to be the agency’s “boots on the ground” at free clinics hosted in several communities. Positions are temporary, not to exceed six months, making them perfect for teachers, retirees, students, and others who are eager to help people learn about fishing skills and ecology.
