New Maryland record longnose gar weighs 20.5 pounds

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recognized David Confair, of Secretary, in Dorchester County, as a new state record holder for longnose gar.
Confair caught the 20.5-pound, 49.5-inch fish on Feb. 8 while fishing in Marshyhope Creek. He was fishing the bottom of the creek in about 15 feet of water with a two-hook sabiki rig with No. 4 hooks and small cut pieces of gizzard shad.

Public input needed on fisheries management plans for 151 Minnesota lakes

March is the month to connect with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources fisheries offices across Minnesota about 151 lakes in 40 counties that will have their fisheries lake management plans updated in 2025.
“People interested in the health and quality of Minnesota’s fisheries are a critical part of the DNR’s fisheries lake management planning process,” said Shannon Fisher, DNR fisheries populations and regulations manager.

Minnesota DNR urges fish house owners to remove shelters as deadline approaches

With warm weather in the forecast for much of Minnesota during the coming week, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds anyone who still has a fish house on the ice to start planning for its removal.
The statutory shelter removal deadline for inland waters in the southern two-thirds of the state is 11:59 p.m. on March 3. The deadline for inland lakes in the northern portion of the state is 11:59 p.m. on March 17.

Restrictions on semiautomatic firearms move forward in Colorado

A Colorado proposal requiring a criminal background check and safety course for people who want to buy semiautomatic guns with detachable magazines passed the state Senate on Tuesday, clearing a major legislative hurdle in a state that’s experienced some of the worst mass shootings in the U.S.
If passed, Colorado would join roughly a dozen other states that require some kind of safety training or exam to purchase a firearm.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota’s Howling for Wolves ‘pauses’ activities; and DNR names new region fisheries manager

A recent tip from a reader – thanks, Mike – led me to a news release from the Minnesota organization, Howling for Wolves. Most folks who read this publication probably recognize that group’s name.
For several years, stories related to wolves and wolf hunting have often included quotes from the group’s leader, Dr. Maureen Hackett, as a means of demonstrating what, exactly, proponents of state wolf management – and hunting – are fighting against. But no more, as far as HFW is concerned. The Feb. 9 release from the group says it’s “pausing” its activities.

Steve Sarley: Getting a fishing education isn’t quite the process it once was

Someone recently asked me how I got into the fishing media business. Funny story, I think.
It was in the latter years of the past century. Sounds incredibly historic, doesn’t it. I had always enjoyed fishing as a pastime. When I wasn’t actually fishing, I enjoyed reading about the sport. My bedroom night table and the rack in my bathroom were piled high with fishing magazines. I contacted a small regional fishing newspaper about the possibility of my writing an article for them.

Ryan Rothstein: Minnesota’s ‘other’ deer species making a comeback

Although it’s not uncommon to find me sifting through trail camera photos at any point in the year, it’s almost a given that’s what I’ll be doing come early October. But for as many trail cam photos that I’ve looked at over the years, I’ll never forget the ones I saw in early October of 2020.
That moment is seared into my memory. I recall staring at my computer screen for a good half-minute-plus, my brain processing what was in front of me. My first thought was that I had inadvertently ingested hallucinogens, or that someone was playing an extremely elaborate prank on me. If memory serves, my verbal reaction went something like this: “No (bleeping) way …”
