What’s going on with the aquatic community below the ice in winter? Plenty

When we’re sitting atop lake ice, the creaking and groaning melody caused by wide swings in air temperatures can be unnerving. On some days when temps go from 20 degrees below (Fahrenheit) zero to 10 degrees above, lake ice will contract and expand, creating a symphony of sound.
It’s winter below the ice as well, and the aquatic community reacts accordingly.

Commentary: Make the turkey Wisconsin’s official state game bird

I am proposing to designate the wild turkey as Wisconsin’s official state game bird because of its deep-rooted history, widespread presence, and special place in Wisconsin’s outdoor traditions.
The turkey is the ideal candidate for this honor. As a hunter who has pursued turkeys across the state, I know the dedication and skill required to harvest one of these majestic birds. The turkey is not just a game bird – it is a symbol of Wisconsin’s conservation success and hunting heritage.

Want to target lake trout through the ice? Here are some smaller waters that fit the bill in Michigan

Two of Michigan’s most popular destinations for winter lake trout are Crystal Lake and Higgins Lake.
Both are substantial, deep lakes that have ideal lake trout habitat, but both require sustained cold temperatures to freeze solidly to allow safe ice angling. That hasn’t happened in recent winters. But there are other smaller lakes that, given even a semblance of winter, can provide ice anglers a lake trout fix.

Michigan hunter promotes CWD testing after shooting first positive whitetail from his area

Joe Wilson from Bellevue, Mich., is on a campaign to encourage more Michigan hunters to have their deer tested for CWD after he bagged an adult buck last fall that was the first whitetail from Eaton County’s Walton Township to test positive for the disease.
He shot the buck on Nov. 1, 2024, during archery season and “it showed no physical signs of being sick,” Wilson said.

Under the ice, crappies offer the best action for Pennsylvania anglers

I liked the weight I felt on the end of the line, and I liked the way the fish was fighting. It was holding tight to the bottom, and I had to lift the tip well above the ice to bring it aloft.
Clearly this was not a bluegill. It wasn’t circling. Instead it kept its head down and surged away.
