Ryan Rothstein: The start of a new year means preparing for a new deer season

As those who know me will happily inform you, I may have something wrong with my brain when it comes to deer and deer hunting.
I’m sitting here in early January, and I’m already thinking about September and beyond. I’ve got tabs on a handful of bucks whose sheds I’d love to find, and I’m praying they make it through to next hunting season, because they’ll be dandies. For those crazies like me, the absolute last thing I want to do is sit inside and watch TV.

200 dead snow geese signals return of avian influenza in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Game Commission suspects that avian influenza caused the deaths of 200 snow geese found Dec. 30 in the greater Allentown area.
Dead birds were recovered from two private properties – in Lower Nazareth Township in Northampton County and in Upper Macungie Township in Lehigh County. The situation was ongoing as of Jan. 3 because sick birds also were observed at both sites.

Commentary: Gun owners foresee less danger ahead with divided Minnesota Legislature

Gun-control advocates appear to be armed and ready to reintroduce several measures when Minnesota’s 2025 legislative session gets under way in January.
Unlike the past two years, however, anti-gun rights DFL legislators no longer control the Minnesota House, making prospects for passage of any further restrictions highly improbable. Of course, as InForum points out, that won’t stop some lawmakers from trying.

Joe Shead: Minnesota’s northeastern deer hunting bleak at best

You hear it all the time from northland deer hunters: There are no deer. There are too many wolves. The Minnesota DNR doesn’t know what it’s doing.
Usually, I just brush this kind of talk aside. I figure if the people saying it spent more time in a tree and less time on a barstool, perhaps their fortunes would improve. But now, at this point, I’m with them.
