For one deer hunter, this was a really poor stand location

There’s something special about sitting in a deer stand. It’s a front-row seat to nature’s wonders. At dawn, the wild world comes alive – songbirds sing, mallards hail, and pheasants crow.
Dusk, too, is a special experience as the sun sinks beneath a pink horizon, and the moon shines in a dark-purple sky. If you’re lucky, you’ll even catch a whitetail sneaking from a bedding area for an evening meal. One experience that’s never desirable, however, is sharing your hunt area with a skunk.

These mini tools will have your mini food plots pulling in deer

Tom Hart, a good buddy, former cop, and current Outdoor News advertising salesman has harvested a lot of big bucks from small urban spots to larger out-of-state leases. The thing is, he doesn’t claim to be a wildlife biologist, but has done a ton of research with experts, won and failed at certain plots, so he had some advice for anyone thinking of building a modest, small, food plot.
Below he lists a few tips to help get a hunter in the game for micro food plots in and around you.

Black ice, big trout (and walleyes, too)

Eager footsteps grounded in common-sense trepidation guide our way out onto the first few inches of jet-black “glass.”

Every hit of the spud bar resonates through our eardrums. Flashes of light from the headlamp catch the childish little smirk as it quickly passes over your partner’s face. Standing upon a transparent boundary line between the world we live in, and what swims beneath, we feel the rush once again. It’s go time.
Early season ice is usually not much; a few inches at best, but that crystal clear, rock hard, “black ice” is the strongest there is.

January fishing in Michigan means mixed ice opportunities on Mullett, Burt, and Black

In the winter of 2023-2024, I didn’t go ice fishing once. I might have been able to sneak out once or twice if it’d been a huge priority, but I didn’t.
Given the poor ice conditions in Michigan, it didn’t seem like it was even worth the effort and trouble of getting the shanty and auger out of storage. These days, if I go ice fishing, it’s usually at one of Mark Martin’s Vacation Ice Fishing Schools. Due to unsafe ice last year, all of Martin’s schools were canceled.
