Ohio cracks down on illegal dumping with grants through ‘Shine a Light on Dumpers’ initiative

Building on the success of the “Shine a Light on Dumpers” initiative, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is expanding the campaign to include funding for community cleanup efforts.
Effective Dec. 5, Yost’s office is allocating $1 million for new grants aimed at helping local governments clean up illegal dump sites and deter future dumping.
“Illegal dumping is an ugly, unhealthy problem no community should face,” Yost said.

Optimism around effort to return quail to Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is encouraged by the early results of a long-term mission to reintroduce bobwhite quail, a native species that disappeared from the landscape two to three decades ago.
The population of 87 quail translocated from other states and released at Letterkenny Army Depot in southeastern Pennsylvania last spring may be expanding based on what biologists heard this fall, according to Haley Keff, the state quail, pheasant and dove biologist.
“We captured a snapshot of reproductive success when we conducted covey call surveys,” she said.

Targeting these nontraditional species through the hard water can be fantastic fun

They are the seemingly odd types you might have ignored in high school. They’re a little different.
Under-appreciated. A bit “off” by conventional standards? But that’s OK for those anglers who pursue something other than walleyes and crappies under the ice. True, these “freaks” may be considered the ugly ducklings of the fish world, but they will out-fight any walleye, and some of them can hold their own in the frying pan.

Steve Sarley: The ‘case of the missing turkeys’ is a suburban mystery

I have a tale I’d like to tell you about and I am going to call it “The Case of the Missing Turkeys.”
What? Bear with me, my friends, I’ll need a little bit of time to flesh this tale out.
Turkeys and turkey hunting are gaining in popularity every year in Illinois. Turkeys are nowhere near white-tailed deer in hunting popularity, but they are getting more popular every year.

Dan Ladd: How our deer-hunting group — the ‘Iron Sight Gang’ — came to be

I’m frequently asked how our Adirondack hunting crew, the Iron Sight Gang, became established. A few have even inquired about what’s involved with joining the “club,” thinking it’s an official organized outfit. It is, however, much simpler than that..

Develop an off-season plan now for your rimfire and centerfire target practice

Off-season for hunting doesn’t mean off-season for shooting. Great riflemen and women get, and stay, that way by shooting regularly.
Ah, but ammo is expensive. Yeah, but so is coffee and beer. Fortunately, in shooting, unlike coffee and beer drinking, there are some great substitutes. The first is dry firing, which sounds lame, but actually works. I saw it work just yesterday when my son-in-law was missing a milk jug at 10 yards with a handgun.  I asked him to dry fire and watch where his sights were when the trigger broke.

Tom Venesky: Today’s social media celebrities not the hunting mentors of years ago

The biggest challenge to getting a child interested in hunting today isn’t time or access to land.
Granted, time and access are major issues, but the more important factor deals with who is teaching our kids about the sport of hunting. I’m not talking about parents, family members, hunter education instructors or anyone like that. It’s the so-called mentors they look up to that appear as celebrities in hunting shows and “influencers” on social media.
