‘Wild places are worth fighting for’: Concern grows for receding South Dakota wetlands

John Cooper, 80 years old and with a new set of knees, still rises before the sun, dons waders, sets up decoys and tries to call in ducks.
“I love waterfowl hunting,” he whispered, nestled into the cattails along the edge of a pond this fall. “The immersive experience of the hunt, learning about these ecosystems, being involved in waterfowl conservation – I love everything about it.”
These days, he worries about disappearing wetlands and hopes the next generation will stop the losses. Activists across the nation share his concern.

Trophy buck, known by local hunters as ‘King Louie,’ taken illegally in New York

A buck of legendary clout, known to hunters within the Fonda/Johnstown locale in Fulton and Montgomery counties in New York as “King Louie,” was poached during the wee hours of the morning of Dec. 5.
New York State Department Of Environmental Conservation Law Enforcement Officers have charged Christpoher Brownell, of Fultonville, with two misdemeanors and two violations after he confessed to taking the deer at night while hunting from the road and while trespassing.

Jeremiah Haas: Patience pays off for ‘like-minded’ Illinois hunters in 2024

Long-time readers may remember a deer I named “Wrapped 10.” After several years of cat-and-mouse with him, he was finally harvested on the farm. For those who are not familiar with the deer, this animal was watched for several years by the hunters, pushed off the farm by larger bodied bucks, but finally he matured and became a breeding buck on the property.
Unfortunately for him, his antlers made him a prime target.
