Dan Ladd: Retirement equity needed for New York outdoor law enforcement

This month, nine new Forest Rangers and 26 Environmental Conservation Officers will enter New York’s outdoor law enforcement workforce. It should be, and certainly could be, more. What is a total of 35 graduates from the two academies who started out in May and June, respectfully, as 58? Why the lack of retention early on or the lack of interest overall?
If you ask the PBA of New York State, the union that represents over 1,100 specialized state law enforcement officers which along with ECOs and Forest Rangers include NYS Park Police and SUNY Police, the problem is retirement equity.

High Falls Flowage muskies big, walleyes and perch plentiful in Marinette County, Wis.

The Peshtigo DNR fisheries team ran a survey on High Falls Flowage in 2018 and found good numbers of game fish and panfish species.
Walleye numbers increased between 2010 and 2018, based on spring fyke netting and electrofishing catches. Netting catches increased from 1.0 walleye per net night in 2010 to 1½ walleyes in 2018. Electrofishing catches went from 3.9 walleyes per mile of shoreline in 2010 to 27.8 per mile in 2018.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: There’s power in having something to look forward to

It’s a good thing when you have something to look forward to.
As this is being written, I am in Virginia visiting family – including my mother in law who turns 95 this month. She still has all her facilities and I don’t believe there is a person alive that enjoys games more than she does. Dice games like Farkle and Yahtzee, board games like Scrabble, and even individual games like word finder and similar mental challenges. She loves playing games.

From mines to the metro, here are some hard-water opportunities for inland trout in Minnesota

The winter trout season may not draw the fanfare and hoopla of the spring walleye opener in Minnesota, but try telling that to a devoted cadre of hardcore, hard-water anglers. Although most ice-fishing opportunities exist in the northern part of the state, no matter where you live, there is probably a chance to tangle with trout nearby.

Dean Bortz: Let’s move Thanksgiving out of Wisconsin’s deer season

This is a purely personal and selfish suggestion and one I’m making only because I think I’m growing cynical, ornery, and old – the old part maybe having something to do with the first two parts. I’ve been pondering this idea for the last goodly number of years – we have to start the gun deer season earlier or we have to move Thanksgiving out of the Wisconsin gun deer season.
