Patrick Durkin: Hot tip from the grave doesn’t mesh with actual hunting trip to Idaho’s Panhandle

A death-bed confession of sorts inspired Logan Hyrkas to organize a hunt for mountain deer in Idaho’s Panhandle during the first half of November.
The hot tip originated something like this: Hyrkas, 31, chatted up a customer in August 2016 while working at a North Dakota car dealership. Hyrkas grew up in the small town of Calumet, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but moved to the West because he loves hunting mule deer. As Hyrkas and the customer swapped deer hunting stories that August day, the man stunned him by sharing the GPS coordinates for his favorite hunting site in Idaho’s Panhandle.

A downer duck season overall in Minnesota ends with a bang

Waterfowling is not supposed to be like bowhunting, where for every successful day there are plenty that have zero action. Unfortunately, Minnesota duck hunters just finished enduring a season so filled with down days that some have permanently hung up their duck gear.
That reaction may be a bit extreme, because no one can control the vagaries of Mother Nature. While more anecdotal than scientific, my observations from spending countless days on vast Swan Lake this past spring and summer were that the upcoming season would be below average.

Ben Moyer: In the outdoors, a good partner makes the day

Many things make a good day outdoors. One is the right partner, whose likes and skills are fitted to that outing.
I’m fortunate to have enjoyed woods and water with different good partners on various kinds of excursions. A recent trip is a fine example of a day made better by who you share it with.
