After two years of tenuous ice conditions thanks to record snowfalls and warm weather in Minnesota, this early-ice season is showing promising signs for potentially a solid year of lake ice across the state.
“It looks like we should be making some ice every day. We’ve got some single-digit temperatures overnight, which is nice, and there’s not much snow cover,” said Chad Mertz, owner of Pines Resort and Campground on Lake Winnibigoshish.

U.S. wildlife officials finalized a recovery plan for imperiled populations of Canada lynx on Nov. 27 and proposed new habitat protections in the southern Rocky Mountains for the forest-dwelling wildcats that are threatened by climate change.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers are hunting a coyote that attacked a 4-year-old girl on Thanksgiving after she mistook it for a dog crouching behind a tree, the agency announced over the weekend.
The girl and another child approached the coyote in northern Colorado Springs, about an hour’s drive south of Denver, when the animal lunged, grabbing the back of her head and causing serious injuries that led to a night in the hospital, CPW said in a press release Saturday.

Deer season closes Dec. 8 in both the Northern and Southern Zone in New York and undoubtedly many hunters have been successful. The meat has been butchered and packaged and freezers are full, but there is one more important chore to complete before putting the hunting gear away for another year.
