Notes off a soiled cuff: Clarifying a photo caption error from Pa. elk season

I’m worried. Maybe folks aren’t reading this paper the way they used to. Almost 22 years ago, when we started this publication, if we screwed up, readers let us know about it in no uncertain terms. But we made a serious mistake in a Page 1 photo caption last issue and didn’t hear a peep.

Massive 27-pointer could be largest buck ever taken in Ohio’s Crawford County

By this summer, there weren’t many outdoor-type people in this small, Crawford County, Ohio, village that weren’t aware of the big buck that cruised the fields out in farm country.
One of those outdoor types was Ben Cramer, who decided early on that he would set his sights on this buck this season.
“This is our first year really hunting him,” Cramer said. “But, a lot of local people have known about the deer.”

Ohio DNR makes investment in blue catfish program

Look no further than Hoover Reservoir for an example of success with Ohio’s trophy blue catfish program. Alum Creek Reservoir is one of the more recent lakes to be stocked. You can almost feel the anticipation for a trophy blue catfish fishery at Alum Creek.
Anglers flock to Hoover for a chance at the largest species in Ohio. License plates in the parking lots are showing up from distant counties, and even out of state plates every now and then.

Presque Isle State Park deer carefully managed in Pennsylvania

While Presque Isle State Park has one of the smallest deer herds of any state park in Pennsylvania, it is one of the most carefully managed.

Since 1989, the ecologically rich, 3,200-acre park encompassing the entire Presque Isle peninsula is open to regulated, controlled hunting in early December to maintain a herd of fewer than 20 bucks and does. This year’s hunt is Dec. 11 and 12, when most of the park, except for the Stull Interpretive Center, will be closed.
