Hearing for alleged mega-poacher in Pennsylvania slated for Dec. 18

A Chester County, Pa., man accused of poaching dozens of trophy bucks with his two adult sons is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Dec. 18 in West Chester district court.
Carl Nelson III, 71, of West Chester, Carroll Nelson IV, 44, of Downingtown, and Mark Nelson, 40, of West Chester, were charged in September with a total of 71 counts involving the alleged illegal taking of deer in Chester and Delaware counties. Their arrests were the culmination of a two-year investigation that began with a tip from a concerned hunter in 2022.

Ohio DNR’s Mary Mertz, Heather Bokman honored by Ohio parks association

Ohio DNR (ODNR) Director Mary Mertz will be inducted into the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association (OPRA) Hall of Fame in February.

Ohio Division of Wildlife opposes elk reintroduction

Efforts by a state legislator and local officials to reintroduce elk into parts of southern Ohio are opposed by the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife (DOW).
Following an Oct. 30 meeting initiated by state Sen. Shane Wilkin to gather input on elk reintroduction, the wildlife division issued a position statement on the subject that laid out multiple reasons why it shouldn’t happen.

Raccoon Creek given state scenic status by Ohio DNR

During a recent ceremony at Lake Hope State Park, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio DNR (ODNR) Director Mary Mertz officially designated Raccoon Creek as Ohio’s newest state scenic river.
The designation makes Raccoon Creek the 16th state scenic river in Ohio and the first in the state’s southeastern region, flowing for more than 100 miles through parts of Vinton, Meigs, and Gallia counties.
