University of Minnesota study shows zebra mussels tied to elevated fish mercury

The University of Minnesota researchers seeking to understand what walleyes and yellow perch eat in near-shore ecosystems on zebra mussel-infested lakes didn’t know the can of worms they’d open.

“We thought the story that we were interested in was more about food web dynamics,” said Naomi Blinick, a researcher and laboratory manager with University of Minnesota’s Larkin Lab. “But when we saw these results about mercury, we knew that this was a much bigger trend that we had to explore in more depth.”

Minnesota CWD cases are up, but remain in known zones

As of Tuesday, Nov. 26, there were 42 new confirmed cases of chronic wasting disease in hunter-harvested deer in 2024 and 34 suspected cases – all in known-CWD zones primarily in the southeastern part of Minnesota.
DPAs 646, 647, and 648 are seeing the most cases with 12, 13, and nine, respectively. Additionally, DPA 645 has four confirmed cases, DPA 649 has three cases, and 642 has one confirmed case. Right now, according to Erik Hildebrand, the Minnesota DNR’s wildlife health supervisor, the 2024 season clearly is trending to have more cases than last year’s total of 44 positives.

Steve Piatt: Hunting deer, and dodging them with the truck, on trips to Pa.

I was pretty confident I’d kill a deer this season, especially as the whitetail rut kicked into high gear. I just wasn’t sure whether it would be with my crossbow or my Dodge Ram.
It’s true. In my decision to abandon a tree stand just up the hill from our home, saving the spot for my wife, Paula, during rifle season, I resigned myself to a 40-minute drive down the road into an Albany Township, Pa., hot-spot I was sure would yield at least a doe, but perhaps a buck or bear.

Ralph Loos: ‘Somebody, somewhere may have broken the law hunting ducks’

One advantage of still putting out a print newspaper is being able to avoid topics with questionable news value by simply shaking my head and mumbling, “We’re not going to waste our ink on that.”
One regular example of this is when the Illinois Department of Transportation sends out a notice each November with a headline like, “Drivers warned of increased deer collisions during mating season!”
Other things and other decisions made by newspaper and magazine editors are more complicated.

Project on ‘understudied yet essential’ sucker took birding approach to studying fish

Fish in the sucker family appear to be, well, “suckers” for a specific range of water temperature that triggers spawning migration.
Specifically, an increase in the number of days that waters reach 43.3 degrees is the best predictor of migration timing, a new study by Shedd Aquarium reveals. Aside from behaviors of the “understudied yet essential” sucker, the Shedd’s research also reveals something about people in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan: they are dependable volunteers who “enabled researchers to gather seven years of data on the spawning migrations of suckers,” the Shedd research team emphasized.

Wardens at Work: Wisconsin man fined $10,407 for poached Grant Co. buck

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Iowa County Conservation Warden Mike Burns was a bit perplexed regarding a headless deer carcass in Grant County called in on the DNR’s anonymous tip line in December 2022.
There was a bullet hole in the carcass and a cape had been removed as well, presumably before the head was cut off.
