Growing drought conditions take hold across Pennsylvania

When water in the Youghiogheny Reservoir got low enough to expose a 206-year old bridge submerged underwater since 1944, curiosity seekers flocked to explore the Somerset- Fayette County, Pa., relic.
About 10,000 visitors showed up in recent weeks to investigate the Great Crossings Bridge – which was built in 1818 as part of the National Highway, and then flooded 125 years later for construction of the Yough Dam – prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to restrict public access, effective Nov. 8.

Pennsylvania biologists ‘stunned’ to find invasive western mosquitofish in Glade Run Lake

It appears that someone did a stocking of their own at the newly refurbished Glade Run Lake in Butler County, Pa., upsetting the ecosystem with an unwanted invasive.
Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission biologists were stunned to discover western mosquitofish – a small but voracious non-native prey species never before documented in Pennsylvania – during an electrofishing demonstration for a Glade Run Conservancy event in early October.

Emerging chemical threat in waterways can be deadly to salmon, trout

Most people depend on their cars to transport them to their outdoor destinations. And despite widely publicized, spirited debates regarding the merits of electric powertrains and autonomous driving, for the foreseeable future, those cars will still have tires.
Perhaps lesser know is that the rubber in those tires contains a chemical called N-(1,3- dimethylbutyl)-N’-phenyl-pphenylenediamine, or 6PPD for short. The chemical 6PPD is used by tire manufacturers to extend a tire’s life but as a tire wears, it leaves behind small rubber particles containing 6PPD which, after a heavy rain, can wash into rivers and streams and transform into a compound called 6PPD-quinone – a compound that studies have shown to be deadly to coho salmon in the northwestern United States.

101-year-old Pennsylvania hunter has a ‘tremendous drive’

Pennsylvania’s Ray Swingle passed the one century mark Oct. 9 by shooting an eight-point buck with a 17.75-inch spread on the Susquehanna County farm where he was born.
He’d hoped to bag the deer on his 101st birthday a day earlier, “so I was a little disappointed,” Swingle said. “But he didn’t come out that night. He was late to supper.”
Swingle was hunting alone with a crossbow from one of several blinds on the 160-acre Union Dale property when he arrowed the buck from 20 yards away.

Michigan bear hunters see season similar to last year’s

Despite unseasonably warm weather throughout much of the season, bear hunters in Michigan reported good success.
“Overall, we had really good hunter success across the state. We heard positive reports about the number of bears at baits. Weather and mast didn’t seem to negatively impact bear activity, and bears are in good condition going into dens,” Cody Norton, the DNR bear specialist, told Michigan Outdoor News. “I think it was a really solid bear season.”

Pennsylvania Game Commission backs off on private lands proposal

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is moving forward with part of its plan to spend some of the $500-plus million derived mainly from gas lease revenue on game lands.
The spending plan dates back to February, when former executive director Bryan Burhans appeared before the Senate Appropriations Committee outlining how the Game Commission planned to spend part of its gas lease windfall.
