Michigan’s November fishing features a smorgasbord in Muskegon

Most Michigan sportsmen have their minds set on some type of hunting in November, whether it’s bowhunting, waterfowling, or upland hunting. November is an excellent time for all three. Throw in all fishing possibilities, and you’ve complicated the choices even further.
You don’t have to go far to find great fishing. If you live in places like Muskegon, you don’t have to go anywhere. There are plenty of opportunities right at your back door.

Commentary: For Minnesota deer hunters, safe hunts are successful hunts

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been planning for this weekend’s Minnesota firearms deer opener since the day last year’s season ended. I’ve pondered my equipment, where I’ll place my stand and my kids’ stands, and what exactly I’ll do with any venison I’m lucky enough to bring home.
I’ve also spent time thinking about how the best-laid plans can be rendered completely moot if safety isn’t the top priority.

As older deer hunters ‘age out,’ who will replace them?

For almost half a century, Rick Deuel, of Steamboat Lake, south of Cass Lake, eagerly awaited the Minnesota firearms deer-hunting season.
“Deer season was great. As a kid, I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to go deer hunting,” Deuel recalls. “The entire family got together, went ‘up north,’ and hunted. I couldn’t wait for them to come back in the evenings so I could hear how everybody did.”
When Deuel reached the magical age of 14, he officially became part of the family’s deer-hunting party, and his enthusiasm for the hunt continued for the next 50 years. In recent seasons, however, his outlook has changed a bit.

A few rules of the road to help you have a fun deer season

Archery season is now in full swing. We have waited all year for this time and many can’t wait to hit the woods and fencerows in hopes of wrapping their tag around a fat doe or a mature buck. Our hopes and dreams have brought us to this time of year. Many hours of practice and stand preparation have come down to this –  deer season.
But whether during the early archery season, or more so with the coming firearms seasons, some folks out there can ruin it for all of us. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind and to help steer you in the right direction so you aren’t one of those people.

Deer with a handgun? It’s possible and even productive in some instances

Technology has not made handgun hunting any easier. The stakes are summed up nicely in Ohio’s 2023-24 deer harvest statistics. Less than 1% (526) of deer were shot with a handgun.
Getting within range is often less difficult than making the shot. When a deer shows up, you realize you are not plinking paper. Who needs an EKG to check their heart? Just go deer hunting. It helps when you are prepared to use a handgun for hunting.

Ben Moyer: Magazine ad a public lands wake-up for Pennsylvania

An ad in a current outdoor magazine points out what Pennsylvanians’ future access to public land for hunting and fishing could lose if politicians who have stated we have too much state game land acreage prevail in their aims. They have pointed out game lands but be sure that all public lands are their potential targets.
The ad is full-page and color – not cheap to run – in a national magazine read from Boston to Los Angeles, and from Alaska to Florida. The magazine’s editorial content advocates for public lands and waters, but ad money is hard for any publication to eschew.
