Commentary: Rules of gun safety important to follow regardless of experience

Pictured are the results of a shotgun barrel after a fired slug was slowed by droplets of frozen tea in the barrel. This very scenario happened to Hageman’s wife, and luckily she was not injured. (Photo by John Hageman)

As another hunting season begins, I was abruptly reminded how easy one gun safety slip-up can quickly ruin a day afield.
After my second dove hunt of the season, I dismantled my antique 12-gauge U.S.S.R.-made Baikal over/under shotgun to clean it as I have done each time since I began hunting about 50 years ago. I usually push a wad of paper towel dipped in Hoppes No. 9 gunpowder solvent through my barrels to remove any fouling until they are smooth and protected from rust.
