Commentary: Rules of gun safety important to follow regardless of experience

As another hunting season begins, I was abruptly reminded how easy one gun safety slip-up can quickly ruin a day afield.
After my second dove hunt of the season, I dismantled my antique 12-gauge U.S.S.R.-made Baikal over/under shotgun to clean it as I have done each time since I began hunting about 50 years ago. I usually push a wad of paper towel dipped in Hoppes No. 9 gunpowder solvent through my barrels to remove any fouling until they are smooth and protected from rust.

Better to sit or stand when on watch in the deer woods? Staying still is key

Since the eyes of a deer can take in a good bit of woodland landscape with their extra-long pupil, any movement, however slight, such as a hunter turning his head to one side, or swatting at a mosquito, or shifting position, can be quickly noticed by a whitetails’ vision.
Experienced hunters know this, and therefore, will look for a watch location that takes advantage of a landscape’s cover, dark shadows or other forms of obscuring features. Such as positioning themselves in the shadow of a large oak, or under the boughs of a big cedar tree, or among a blowdown, or against a boulder, so as not to be seen or noticed by passing deer.

Teen breaks her mom’s Michigan state record bear mark that stood for 26 years

In an amazing twist of fate and luck, 15-year-old Autumn Pratt from Grayling set a new Michigan record for black bear among females in the bow and arrow category last fall.
The bear Autumn shot eclipsed the one her mother, Dawn, shot 26 years ago and has been the record ever since. And Autumn was wearing the same camo outfit her mother did when she got her state record bear.

Devising a duck decoy plan: When, where, how many?

Decoys are among the most valuable of waterfowl-hunting tools.
Unless you’re pass-shooting or jump-shooting, they’re essentials. But there’s more to just tossing them out haphazardly. Here are some important things to consider when using decoys to bring waterfowl into range.

Michigan Outdoor Observations: Abide by hunter orange laws, stay safe this season

The issue of hunter orange surfaces every year about this time. Many, if not most, hunters have concerns that the blaze orange color scares away deer. “It makes you stand out like a giant pumpkin,” some have said.
I don’t know the scientific facts about a deer’s eyes but I can honestly say I have killed dozens of deer over the years while clad in at least one garment of hunter orange and it never seems to bother them.

Chesapeake Bay striped bass survey shows little change in poor spawning success

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently announced results of this year’s juvenile striped bass survey, which tracks the reproductive success of Maryland’s state fish in the Chesapeake Bay.
The 2024 young-of-year index is 2.0, well below the long-term average of 11.0, and marks the sixth consecutive year of poor reproduction.

Nature Smart: Pumpkins… much more than just decor

I would like to tell you about something so common and ubiquitous in our American culture that I’m sure you don’t think about it as being very special. It’s something that has been around for a long time, and you see these things every year. And no doubt you might even eat them or at least taste the flavor, especially at this time of year. I’m talking about pumpkins.

Commentary: Pennsylvania DMAP program offering way too many tags on northcentral public lands

Pennsylvania’s Deer Management Assistance Program – DMAP – was designed for landowners to address deer overpopulation problems on private property. Unfortunately, it has turned into a sneaky way for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and most recently the Game Commission to further reduce deer numbers on public land above and beyond the allocated quota.
