Ohio Insider: Are young hunters more likely to shoot antlerless deer than adults? Doesn’t seem so

Are we as Ohio sportsmen and women doing it wrong when it comes to raising the next generation of deer hunters?
I pose this question on the heels of receiving an eye-opening graphic from ODNR Division of Wildlife (DOW) Deer Program Administrator Mike Tonkovich. The graphic is nothing official, mind you, but it came out of a question posed by this reporter to Tonkovich about a month ago.

Hen survival rates “fairly high” during first two years of Ohio turkey study

Ohio’s turkey researchers are right in the middle of a research project on the nesting and reproduction of wild turkeys in the state.
The current research being conducted by Ohio State University (OSU), the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and the Division of Wildlife began in 2023 and is scheduled to run for two more years, said Mark Wiley, the Division of Wildlife’s lead turkey biologist. The researchers deployed transmitters on 49 hens in 2023 and outfitted another 102 birds with telemetry equipment in 2024.

Ohio study aims to better understand how toxic algae blooms impact human health

Steven Haller remembers the look of fear on people’s faces when toxic algae in Lake Erie made it into his community’s water supply 10 years ago, shutting it down for two days.
Since then, Haller, a clinical researcher in the University of Toledo’s department of medicine, has set out to help provide answers about how harmful algal blooms can affect the health of people who live and play nearby.
“I see all of the concern in the faces of people here,” Haller said. “They want the answers. They want to know.”

Iowa’s Turkey River Wildlife Area has a lot to offer outdoor users

Four turkeys cautiously left the safety of the timber’s cover to wander into a small alfalfa field to hunt for insects at the aptly named Turkey River Wildlife Area.
The 410-acre public area in southeast Howard County sits on a landscape transition from the glaciated north-central Iowa to the Driftless northeast Iowa. With rock outcroppings and steep valleys, this oddly shaped public area is 1-1/2 mile south of Cresco and open for year-round recreation.
