Westlake photographer wins Ohio’s Legacy Stamp contest

A colorful photograph of a hummingbird clearwing moth, an essential pollinator, will be featured on the 2025 Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The winning photo was taken by Roger Friedman, of Westlake, Ohio. Friedman photographed the moth in northeast Ohio’s Lake County.

Poachers are exploiting the high demand for eagle feathers that are sacred among Native Americans

America’s golden eagles face a rising threat from a black market for their feathers used in Native American powwows and other ceremonies, according to wildlife officials, researchers and tribal members.
The government’s response has been two-pronged: A crackdown on rings illegally trafficking dead eagles coupled with a longstanding program that lawfully distributes eagle feathers and parts to tribal members.

Pennsylvania waterways officers snubbed at Fish & Boat Commission board meeting

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat commissioners at their recent meeting were asked to consider a petition to increase the salaries of the agency’s law enforcement officers, but they failed to act.
The commissioners’ inaction was witnessed by most of its waterways conservation officers. In a show of unity, 53 of the current total force of 56 waterways conservation officers attended the meeting.
