Minnesota’s youth, antlerless season deer kills both increase, while crossbow take inches upward

Participants in the youth deer hunting and early antlerless-only seasons in Minnesota – both held Oct. 17-20 this year – saw harvest increases over a year ago.
During the youth season, just over 6,000 deer were taken this year, an increase of 10% over last year’s kill of 5,670, according to the DNR. While there’s not a separate license for the season, to date about 20,400 youth deer licenses had been sold, down 1% from a year ago.

Shallow streams, weather extremes hinder Minnesota’s North Shore fish

After a spring and early summer of intense rains and flooding, drought conditions have reduced the flows of some of Lake Superior’s North Shore streams, in some cases to a trickle, thus putting in jeopardy populations of various trout species heading into winter.
The weather extremes – which some DNR officials and fishing guides worry is the new normal – are testing the resiliency of Lake Superior streams and the fish (steelhead, brook trout, and other species) popular with anglers that inhabit them.

What’s the extent of invasive silver carp’s presence in Wisconsin’s lower Chippewa and Black rivers? Officials working to find out

In July, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) began receiving ominous reports from anglers who saw fish leaping high in the air at the Dells dam on the lower Chippewa River in Eau Claire. By Late October biologists made it official, confirming that silver carp, an Asian invasive species, have been detected in portions of the lower Chippewa River and lower Black River in western Wisconsin.
While biologists say it might only be a low population and there is no evidence of reproduction, they are using the opportunity to remind people about carp, and about Asian species in general, in local waters.

Volunteers still the backbone of firearms safety courses in Minnesota

In the era of technology, in-person classes and field day training for firearms safety has become a thing of the past for adults, while field day training for youth under the age of 16 is still required in Minnesota.
That’s something the Minnesota DNR intends to keep.
“The classroom courses are not going to be going away,” said Capt. Jon Paurus, safety training education manager for the DNR Enforcement Division.

‘Silent’ losses of livestock due to wolves needs to be talked about, some in Wisconsin livestock circles say

Dead cattle, sheep, and horses that can easily be confirmed as wolf kills by federal agents are the most visible and “accountable” losses suffered by producers.
That information reaches the public. An “X” amount of money was paid out for “X” number of dead livestock for the year. What’s less talked about – and known – outside of livestock circles is the extensive impact on livestock that encounter wolves, but are not killed.
