Effort under way to map entire bottom of Great Lakes

Jennifer Boehme grew up scouting beaches around her home in St. Petersburg, Florida, for whatever she could find. Rocks, sand dollars, coquina mollusks — anything the ocean gave up.
Now, 40 years later, Boehme wants to launch another treasure hunt. As executive director of the Great Lakes Observing System, she’s leading a campaign to map every meter of the lakes’ bottom.

Patrick Durkin: Petty politicians still bickering as Wisconsin DNR secretary post remains vacant after a year

The captain’s chair at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) sits empty a year after former DNR Secretary Adam Payne gave 10 days’ notice before retiring Nov. 1, 2023.
Payne served only 10 months after accepting Gov. Tony Evers’ appointment on Dec. 27, 2022. His Oct. 20, 2023, resignation letter cited neither job dissatisfaction nor age or health concerns. He was 55 when accepting the job. Evers, meanwhile, has said little about this cabinet vacancy, even though the DNR is Wisconsin’s most visible and publicly engaged agency.

Work on New York’s Skaneateles Lake boat launch and fishing pier slated for 2025

A New York State Department of Environmental Conservation fishing pier/boat launch project on the southwest end of Skaneateles Lake has been delayed for nearly a decade – primarily because of a nearby bald eagle nest.
Work finally started late last year, but stopped this year. Nevertheless, DEC officials say the project is still a go.

Missouri allows drone use in recovery of wildlife – will Illinois join?

A new law in neighboring Missouri is allowing hunters there to use drones to recover wounded deer, turkey, and other wildlife this fall.
Illinois wildlife officials have not given in to the new technology, as noted in the 2024-25 Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations: “It is unlawful to take, pursue or intentionally harass or disturb in any manner any wild birds or mammals by use or aid of any vehicle, conveyance, or unmanned aircraft (drone) . . .”
Illinois DNR even went a step further when asked by a St. Louis TV station about Missouri legalizing drones to recover game animals.

Endangered salamander mussel found for first time in Illinois in 120 years

For the first time in nearly 120 years, researchers confirmed the presence of live individuals of the state-endangered salamander mussel in Illinois, marking a major biodiversity milestone for the state.
Conservation biologist Mark Davis and malacologist Sarah Douglass of the Illinois Natural History Survey, combined environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques with conventional mussel surveys to detect both the salamander mussel and its host, the mudpuppy in the Sangamon River in central Illinois.
