ENRTF-funded metro whitetail study ramps up in Minnesota

Seeking to fill in the data gap of white-tailed deer movement and disease transmission across the Twin Cities metro area’s suburbs, University of Minnesota Associate Professor Meggan Craft sought funding from the Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund.
“What we know a lot about deer biology is from rural areas, and so we don’t really know how deer move, what their activity patterns are, during the day and night,” Craft said of the information researchers hope to obtain.

Wildfires in western North Dakota burn more than 120,000 acres, claim two lives

Multiple wildfires are sweeping across the prairies and badlands of western North Dakota, leaving devastation in their wake.
Two people have died, and eight have been injured. The Williams County Sheriff’s Office reported that Johannes Nicolaas Van Eden, 26, a ranch hand in the Tioga area, was killed in the fires. Edgar Coppersmith, 47, of Tioga, also died from injuries sustained in the fires. Driven by high winds and dry conditions, the fires have burned through more than 120,000 acres.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Picking out a personalized plate for Ohio’s outdoors

In a day and age when very nearly every SUV, pickup truck, and such are accursed to resemble one another, a vehicle owner trying to set himself (or herself) apart can turn to various mechanisms.
Bumper stickers that read “Trucks Are For Girls, Silly” and “A Girl And Her Jeep Are A Beautiful Thing” or “A Man And His Truck – Can’t Get Any Better” are festooned to the tail of one’s vehicle.
Nothing, however, says “mine” like a personalized motor vehicle license plate.

When it comes to muskie fishing in Michigan, the ‘good ol’ days’ are now

When I started my career as a DNR fisheries management biologist in northern Michigan in the 1970s, there were fewer muskie waters available. Also, the overall size structure of muskies in them was much smaller than now.
The area I started in – the western Upper Peninsula – had more viable muskie waters than many areas of the state, but the size structure of muskie in those water bodies was much smaller. What changes happened to result in the overall size structure to improve for muskies in Michigan waters?

Outdoor Insights: Fishers rebound in Minnesota, and making up for lost time in the hunting woods

An update to the 2024-25 trapping season has piqued my interest: Minnesotans can now trap fishers statewide. Dedicated readers of this space have seen trail camera images that my dad has obtained of fishers on his property in southeastern Minnesota the past few years.
A valuable furbearer, fishers were nearly extinct in Minnesota by the early 1900s, but they’ve staged a comeback in the forested region, and in the past 20 years, they’ve shown an increasing adaptability and tolerance of people.
