Rotational grazing: A pipeline to better water quality in Fillmore County, Minn.

The rotational grazing system Carter Lee installed on 70 acres of Fillmore County blufftops is revitalizing pastureland, improving soil health, and protecting the Root River, a designated trout stream.
“That piece originally was in the CRP program (Conservation Reserve Program), and when it came out, we decided we would really like to put (the land) back into perennial grass to use for grazing,” Lee said.

On Sept. 14 in Washburn County’s town of Stinnett, Wis., bear hunters lost three of their Plott trailing hounds to wolves that ran down the dogs and killed them.

Stocking program provides a limited Atlantic salmon fishery in Michigan waters of Lake Huron

We were trolling in 130 to 170 feet of water in Lake Huron off Harbor Beach, Mich., and things were slow, when we noticed a big fish on the sonar right on the bottom. We figured it was a lake trout. Brandon Stanton, the skipper, immediately dropped one of the downriggers that was running higher in the water column to the bottom. And we connected just like that.
My brother, Phil, who grabbed the rod, pronounced this was “no lake trout.”

Pheasant hunt in Illinois has dodged pellets over the years to remain going

More than 57% of pheasants released at 16 Illinois DNR controlled hunting sites last season were harvested – one of the top hunter success rates in the program’s history. Most hunters are just happy the program still flies.
A full 15 years after the state’s entire controlled pheasant hunting program was winged and nearly blown out of the sky by an indifferent governor and a wobbly state budget, dogs and their hunter-owners are still able to reserve an opportunity each autumn to hunt and shoot a ringneck.
