Al Lindner: There’s much to love about fishing the heart of October

October is officially here, and with it comes a slew of activities.
Football season, hunting (of various types), and a number of other fall-related happenings take precedence over time on the water for many. For me, however, it’s all about fishing. The month of October is, without a doubt, my favorite time of the year to fish.

Be willing to move stand locations this season to fill more deer tags

A friend owns several hundred acres of land and, insists on hunting from the same tree stand every season. Sometimes he’s successful; sometimes he’s not.
In my opinion, the times he fails to tag a deer are based more on his unwillingness to move to a different setting than it is due to the lack of deer. My friend is a hunter who sticks to a favorite spot simply because “it was good in the past.” Many other hunters feel the same way and do the same thing often with the same result.

Michigan Natural Resources Commission being sued over coyote season reduction, response expected soon

Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association have filed lawsuits against the Michigan Natural Resources Commission over the closure of coyote hunting for three months stating in court documents that the decision was not based on “sound science” as required by the law.
The NRC voted in March to close coyote hunting from April 16 to July 14. The July 15 to April 15 period had been the traditional coyote season in Michigan until it was changed to a year-round season in 2016.

Jeremiah Haas: Coordinate with local farmers for a better deer hunt

While some of our area farmers have gotten a jumpstart on the beans, most of the corn across northern Illinois is going to be in the field for a while yet, especially with the rain in late September.
Those fields are holding deer, especially if you are in a higher pressured area, so how can you use that to your advantage? Talk to the farmer and coordinate your hunts with his harvest plans.
