Birds of Champaign-Urbana in Illinois using different spaces in different ways

Researchers tracked birds in Illinois parks and backyards in the state’s twin cities.
They found that birds rely on spaces in different seasons and for different reasons. University of Illinois scientists took regular snapshots of birds in 39 public parks and 41 private yards in Urbana and Champaign.

Ralph Loos: Are rifles boosting deer hunting numbers in Illinois? Not so far

There were assumptions made that legalizing rifles – albeit the single-shot, centerfire variety – would entice more Illinoisans to try deer hunting for the very first time or return to deer hunting after a hiatus.
In other words, with a lighter, shoulder-friendlier, kinder to the ears sort of weapon in play, many figured deer permit sales in the state would grow like pigweed in pig manure on a pig lot. Lawmakers who helped push the rifle hunting legislation into law two years ago were often heard saying things like, “This’ll put more rear-ends in deer stands.”

How to smoke wild game for mouthwatering meat

Preventing largemouth bass cannibalism is focus of Southern Illinois University study

The largemouth bass is popular among anglers, who know that familiar “thump” of a fish hitting a lure.
But researchers at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale are studying ways to keep the infamously cannibalistic species off its own menu.
Can fishermen benefit from the research? It’s too early to say. Can anglers learn from it? Most certainly they can.
