Christine Thomas: Gotta love a great Airedale hunting story

In honor of National Dog Day, my friend, outdoor writer Jim Zumbo, challenged his Facebook friends to post their favorite stories about a canine companion making a spectacular game bird retrieve. I thought that would be a great idea for column.
I do not know anyone who owns a bird dog who does not like to tell stories about the amazing things their dogs have done. I am no exception.

New York big game biologist discusses state’s deer, bear and turkey topics

With archery season open across most of New York and bear season in the Adirondacks – as well as Northern Zone crossbow, muzzleloading and rifle seasons on the horizon, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Game Management Section Head Jeremy Hurst recently addressed the outdoor media to discuss a number of topics.
First, as his colleague, biologist Brandon Quirion shared previously with New York Outdoor News, Hurst indicated that there are plenty of whitetails on the landscape in both the Northern and Southern zones.

Illegal Burmese python seized in New York

A 13-foot Burmese python was confiscated from an upstate New York man who was keeping the still-growing snake in a small tank, authorities said.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation said it got a complaint about an illegally owned snake in New Hartford, in Oneida County, on Aug. 28. Environmental Conservation Police Officer Jeff Hull responded and found the snake in a 4-to-5-foot tank.
