Before the day of the deer and before the time of the turkey, Ohio’s hunters pursued small game critters.
The numbers were not insignificant, either. Hundreds of thousands of sportsmen donned heavy-canvas pants and jackets or else slipped into jeans and flannel and chased a potpourri of small-game species like rabbits, pheasants, grouse, and squirrels. Myself being among them, and some of the most delightful of memories surround the activities, which included squirrels.
