Early-season locations to arrow an A.M. buck with a bow

It’s a common refrain in the whitetail space. You can’t hunt mornings in the early season, because the bucks are all back in their beds before first light. While this is a convenient excuse to sleep in, it might not be the most prudent whitetail-hunting advice.
There are plenty of opportunities to hunt early-season deer in the morning.

John Pollmann: South Dakota youth season offers lessons learned for young hunter

South Dakota’s two-day youth waterfowl season took place last weekend, and the conditions couldn’t have been much better for the state’s young hunters.
Cool, fall-like weather was accompanied by blue skies and a bit of a breeze. The water delivered by summer rains had the countryside looking lush, with touches of yellow, brown, and orange beginning to emerge in fields of green. It truly felt like fall. And yet, my 13-year-old son, Miles, learned a valuable lesson about duck hunting: You win some, and you lose some.

Northern New York deer herd in good shape with opener looming

Another mild winter for much of the region and perhaps some help from mast crop production has New York State Department of Environmental Conservation big game biologists optimistic for ample whitetail numbers as deer season kicks off in the Northern Zone.
The region’s early archery season begins Sept. 27. Come October, the Northern Zone’s crossbow, muzzleloading and regular seasons will get under way, respectively.

Ron Schara: On pocket gophers and Minnesota fisheries management

I screwed up. A fella talked to me at Game Fair and said my recent column in Outdoor News about my great skills as a trapper of pocket gophers included a big error.
I examined my own gopher research and discovered that yes, I screwed up. I wrote that pocket gophers use their cheek pockets to help move dirt in their underground tunnels. Wrong!

Ben Moyer: Lifejacket wear is easy and smart

On a recent windy and overcast morning, I thought poor fishing was the worst thing to deal with. But while paddling my kayak back toward the launch, a new concern appeared.
I witnessed a couple launching a small johnboat. Before the man stepped in, I watched him instruct his female companion to sit on a high-perched casting chair at the bow, which she did. The chair seemed excessively elevated, which placed the craft’s center of gravity inadvisably high.
