The opener of any hunting season is always cause for excitement, but when it comes to the dawn of the annual archery deer hunt, I’m truly jazzed.
While the rut gets most of the attention from whitetail nuts, I’d take the first two weeks of the September season over the entire month of November if I’m targeting a mature buck. I have a hard time convincing people of this, but I have at least three solid reasons, and they’re all in my man cave; my three largest bucks have all been shot in the first two weeks of the season.

Bowhunting historian Bill McCrary says it’s accurate to call Racine’s Roy I. Case (1888-1986) the father of Wisconsin bowhunting and co-founder of the Wisconsin Bowhunters Association.
“Roy Case left his fingerprints on every aspect of archery in Wisconsin during his era,” McCrary said.
But even those acknowledgments probably sell Case short. McCrary, 79, of Madison, says no other bowhunter can equal the impact Case had on archery and bowhunting in Wisconsin the past century.

Wisconsin’s passion for wild turkeys, and turkey hunting, was in full strut in some of the state’s most beautiful turkey habitat in late July.
The Wisconsin Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation celebrated the return of the wild turkey to Wisconsin along with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) July 27 at Cabela’s and the Barn Restaurant. The guest speaker was one of the most passionate advocates for the wild turkey, Rob Keck, past executive vice-president of NWTF, now serving as the hunting and conservation ambassador for Bass Pro Shops.

The Grand River is Michigan’s longest river at 256 miles. Other than below the 6th Street Dam in Grand Rapids, it doesn’t see much fishing pressure, especially in the summer months.
Once it enters southwestern Ingham County, it transforms into a classic rock-infested smallmouth river. Beginning in Eaton though Clinton, Ionia and Kent counties, the Grand River is smallmouth heaven.
