During late summer, turn to baits that lots of fish like

The old saying that variety is the spice of life doesn’t seem to carry much weight for the modern sportsman or woman. A few decades ago, the generalists ruled the scene in both hunting and fishing. Today, it’s all about single-species pursuits, but it doesn’t have to be.
In the case of fishing, not only is it sometimes a good idea to head out with an open mind, but it’s also necessary for success.

Ryan Rothstein: For archery deer hunters, crunch time has arrived

As unbelievable as it seems, the calendar has already flipped to August. Naturally, as is tradition, I’m way behind on my offseason chores. Overall, I feel a lot better than I have the past couple of years, but I can’t deny I’d love to be farther ahead than I am.
Though food plots are all buttoned up, there are still a few stands to trim, lots of target practice to fit in, and public land to scout.

Need a new scope for your .22? Here’s what to consider to obtain better accuracy

Don’t break the bank when buying a .22 rimfire scope, but don’t make the mistake of going “cheap” either. Traditionally .22 scopes have been seen as inexpensive sights. Many caused more shooting problems than they solved. One of the biggest was poor accuracy.
How can a magnified sight picture lead to poorer accuracy? Poor image quality, excessive flare, and parallax.

Special archery deer hunts coming up in Ohio

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves is holding special archery deer hunts at nine locations bordering the Little Miami, Stillwater, and Big and Little Darby state scenic rivers. These sites offer excellent hunting conditions while reducing the impact of deer browsing on native plant communities, according to the ODNR.

Jeremiah Haas: Illinois youth trap shooter finishes among nation’s best at championship in Michigan

Once qualified, they need to qualify for the finals by being one of the top 401 scores after the first event. The second event is the finals, so you know there is a lot of pressure on these high schoolers when just 100 targets determine a year’s worth of work.

A long-time archer reflects on 70 years of flinging arrows

Of course I remember, it was red. It was red and even then I knew it was big medicine. Not only that, I was with my father. We’d go over to a neighbor’s house, easily done as the big backyards ran into one another, where bales of straw had been set up against the wall of a large barn.
Talk about special! My presence was not only tolerated but encouraged. We were shooting our bows, real bows! And I got to shoot with the grown-ups.

Michigan bill would block wolf management funding until hunting season is established

Two Upper Peninsula lawmakers want to block state funding for wolf management until the Michigan Department of Natural Resources establishes a hunting season, a move opposed by the state’s largest conservation organization.
State Reps. Dave Prestin, R-Cedar River, and Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock, introduced House Bill 5824 in June as a means of pressuring the DNR into advocating for a wolf hunt, which is currently prohibited as wolves remain under federal Endangered Species Act protections.
