3D versus Bull’s-eyes: Target choice matters leading up to hunting season

While there are diehard bowhunters who shoot year-round, most folks don’t get serious about target practice until the middle of summer.
This is when whitetail bucks start showing their headgear in a meaningful way, and the reality that September is closer than it seems tends to sink in.
You’d be hard-pressed to make an argument that too many bowhunters over-practice in the pre-season, so any level of shooting is worthwhile. There is also the reality that the right kind of shooting goes a long way toward being truly efficient in the field.

Sandhill cranes may be moving into Pennsylvania

Bird populations are often changing – some populations contract their range, while others expand. One bird species that appears to be extending its range into the Keystone State is the sandhill crane.
In early July, Kateri McGaw sighted a strange long-legged bird near her home in Martinsburg, Blair County. Upon looking it up, she discovered that it was a sandhill crane. She shared her find with a few friends and relatives.

House bill names walleye the official state fish in Ohio

With little fanfare, the Ohio House of Representatives recently agreed to name the walleye as the official state fish.
House Bill 599, which passed the House 93-4, designates sander vitreus – commonly known as the walleye – as the official fish of the state of Ohio. State Reps. Sean Brennan, D-Parma, and D.J. Swearingen, R-Huron, introduced the bill.
“The walleye – sander vitreus – is the only choice to be Ohio’s official state fish,” argued Brennan in his testimony to the State and Local Government committee.

Steve Sarley: A surprise fish, and a surprise extended stay in the ICU

Remember me? I hope you do. I took a surprise vacation for a couple of Outdoor News issues, but it wasn’t the kind of vacation I would have chosen if I had my choice.
I would have chosen a trip to chase monster fish in either Canada’s northwoods or in Central America, but that isn’t where I spent the last month. I’ve spent the last month in Central DuPage Hospital’s IC ward and in Wheaton’s Marianoy Rehab center, recovering from a stroke I suffered the beginning of May.

Ryan Rothstein: Time to get to know your local bucks

I don’t normally start becoming antsy about getting trail cameras out quite yet, but with the number of local bucks that made it through last season, I’ve been itching more than normal to see what’s out there.
Full disclosure: I have a few cameras set up broadly to cover ground and see what’s around. Typically, I wait until at least Aug. 1 for that, but there’s nothing wrong with getting some early intel.
And anyway, with Minnesota having a mid-September archery opener, it’s good to gather as much pre-season information as possible if you’re looking to punch your buck tag early.

Steve Carney: Condition your crawlers for better walleye fishing

As we slide through the month of July, nightcrawlers on live-bait rigs are now replacing minnows as the primary bait for walleyes.
Not all crawlers are created equal, and there are things you can do to enhance the effectiveness of these amazing baits and turn them into “super crawlers!”
Here are some tips that have worked for me over the years.
