Federal agency has plans to prohibit bear baiting in Alaskan national preserves

The National Park Service said last week that it intends to ban hunters from baiting bears in national preserves in Alaska.
The new rule, set to take effect later this summer, would bar sport hunters from using bait, such as bacon grease, pastries, syrup or dog food, to attract bears, the agency said in a statement. Baiting “encourages bears to become conditioned to human-provided food, increasing the likelihood of negative human-bear interactions,” the agency said.

Utah plant fire could affect trout, salmon hatcheries in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan

A February fire at a Utah aquaculture feed plant may affect trout and salmon fish hatchery operations now and well into the future in at least Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
DNR fish hatchery supervisors in all three states have depended on Skretting’s specialized trout and salmon feed to raise trout and salmon for inland waters and the Great Lakes. Skretting’s Tooele, Utah, plant manufactures a wide range of aquaculture feeds. The fire may force the closure of that plant.

Tornado hits Wisconsin pheasant supplier’s facilities

It might be a pheasant hunter’s dream to be in the middle of thousands of loose pheasants, but that’s not what Bill MacFarlane wanted.
MacFarlane, owner and president of MacFarlane Pheasants, Inc. in Janesville, Wis., incurred Mother Nature’s wrath June 22 when an EF2 tornado ripped through the area, tearing the roof off brooder barns and destroying outdoor pheasant pens on the farm.

Damage assessment to property, wildlife begins after flooding in Minnesota

An angler casting to carp on a paved street in Faribault. Kayakers paddling through Valleyfair, the popular amusement park in Shakopee in the shadow of the Minnesota River.
Dead deer fawns – likely drowned – located as part of a Minnesota DNR research project. Storied duck camps on Heron Lake swimming in flood water. Manure pits reportedly overflowing at large feedlots in southern Minnesota.
The early-summer deluge of rain and recent flooding across roughly half of Minnesota after multiple years of drought has provided some bizarre and heartbreaking scenes the past two weeks.

Minnesota’s Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Summer crappies require time, patience

Summer crappies aren’t the easiest fish to find. After the spawn, crappies tend to stay fairly close to the same areas and migrate to deeper water.
We’re not talking 18 feet or more, but depths of 8 to 12 feet. Crappies love some type of cover nearby and will be looking for emerging weedbeds, brush, rock piles, and shoreline docks that have food and shade.

Multi-species opportunity awaits on Lapeer County’s Nepessing Lake in Michigan

It’s well known among local anglers that Lapeer County’s Lake Nepessing is a good bass lake.
There were a total of seven bass tournaments held on the lake last year, according to the Michigan DNR’s bass tournament registration information, and another six are scheduled this year between June 12 and Oct. 6. Not only does this water body attract tournament anglers, but Master Angler records show that Nepessing has produced four MA largemouth bass including a whopping 24.6-incher back in 2010.
