A big male black bear with a dressed weight of 409 pounds was struck and killed by a car on M-32 in Alpena County, Mich., on June 10 about five miles east of Hillman.
The bear’s live weight would have been about 470 pounds.
In the fall, that bear would have had an estimated weight of around 600 pounds. No one at the scene of the accident wanted the bear, so the state police officer who investigated claimed the carcass to salvage both the meat and hide.

Caesar Creek Lake in southwest Ohio offers a plethora of fish species for anglers and is a real gem of a lake in Warren and Clinton counties.
It encompasses about 2,830 acres at the normal summer pool level. Construction of the dam began in October 1971 and the gates were closed to start filling in January 1978. Caesar Creek is the deepest inland lake in Ohio with a depth of 115 feet near the dam. While under control of the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Ohio Division of Wildlife provides resource management of the fishery and wildlife area.
A fishing boat valued at $130,000 and linked to an Ohio criminal case that made national headlines is now up for auction, according to WJW TV in Cleveland.
In May 2023, Jacob Runyan, 43, of Cleveland, and Chase Cominsky, 36, of Hermitage, Pa., were sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to cheating in a walleye fishing tournament on Lake Erie. As part of their penalty, they had to forfeit the boat they used in the tournament to the Ohio Division of Wildlife. The 2022 boat is now posted as part of a government online auction.
